We assess bamboo at houses, rental properties and commercial premises. A residential survey costs from £210 + VAT, with the relevant assessments included.
A bamboo survey report can form part of the paperwork requested by a mortgage lender. Banks and building societies commonly ask for this information when considering an application.
The right course of action depends on the location and extent of the bamboo. A specialist surveyor will inspect the site and explain which treatment or removal option is appropriate.
Based in the Southwest Knotweed Group, Southwest Bamboo provides invasive-plant services for customers across Cornwall. The work can include planned herbicide applications or the physical excavation of bamboo, selected to suit the circumstances at each property.
We help customers understand what will happen at every stage: first the survey, then the agreed management plan, and later any applicable guarantee period. Our bamboo team serves sites across the wider southwest and can explain the process as the work progresses.
Bamboo management may involve decisions that continue over time, so choosing a contractor is an important step. As a family-run business, we place emphasis on clear advice, dependable service and a relationship built on trust. The Southwest Knotweed Group has been serving the region since 2011; during that time, it has developed experience in invasive-plant work and a reputation for being accountable and professional. We aim to make that experience useful to each customer by providing advice from suitably qualified people.
Since 2011, our purpose has been to give householders and commercial clients access to knowledgeable, professional support with invasive weed problems. That aim continues to guide the service we provide.
Our methods and systems have progressed as the industry has changed. Site inspections are documented, survey reports are prepared using established processes, and visit records help keep work organised and traceable. We continue to refine those processes, while keeping customer care, technical understanding and professional conduct at the centre of the service.

Bamboo can damage property or become difficult to manage, particularly as it establishes and matures. Getting advice early gives you a chance to deal with it before the problem develops further.
Take photographs of the plant and send them through the free bamboo identification service on our website. The team can use the images to help distinguish between running and clumping bamboo.
Clumping varieties generally spread less aggressively than running bamboo, so the risk they pose to buildings is often lower. That does not mean they are always harmless; depending on the situation, clumping bamboo may still need attention.
Bamboo spreading across a boundary can become a neighbour dispute. Although there is no specific law dealing solely with bamboo, encroachment may be regarded as a nuisance under common law. Raise the issue with your neighbour and take steps to address it promptly rather than allowing it to continue.
Removing the visible stems does not necessarily deal with the plant below ground. Cutting it back can be followed by renewed growth, which may make the bamboo appear more vigorous the next season.
Do not try to kill bamboo with diesel or substances that are not approved for weed control. Using them can pollute the soil and may result in serious penalties, potentially including prosecution, if the Environment Agency becomes involved. Seek advice on an appropriate control method instead.
Work involving bamboo beside a watercourse needs particular care. Southwest Knotweed staff hold the NPTC PA1, PA6 and PA6 AW qualifications for herbicide application, and an aquatic licence is required before treatment is carried out where a watercourse is present. The herbicides used have aquatic approval. These requirements are one reason to avoid DIY treatment in or near water, where an unsuitable product or method could cause contamination.
